Singapore my home Friday, July 17, 2009 8:00 AM
As Singapore's 44th birthday approaches, plenty of activities have been planned all over the island and in RP to celebrate. Blog about your NDP related experiences and send the post to us, and you stand to win a NDP funpack.

Ever since i step into poly life, all the spirit for National Day is not as high anymore. Maybe i was more active back then. To think back, it was one of the most exciting time of every year where we had to design our classrooms with the theme Singapore and all the wacky dances that we have to do together in the parade square on my secondary school's National Day celebration. With all the enthusiasm, i would be swinging my arms and doing the moves that we were taught and be singing," Deep in my heart, I would _____. Right from the start.." Oh well. I forgot the lyrics. Can't blame myself cause that was years ago. When i type this down about the song, it make me smile and laugh a little because I didn't know i was that proud of my own country. Haha.

I still remembered way back in 2005 when i was in Secondary 3, I was a big fan of Taufik Batisah and during that point of time, NDP was all over Singapore and i was at Tampines screaming for Taufik. We went around in our red shirts and blouses to show we are true blue Singaporeans and yeah, was i proud of it. Then, there were people singing the " Deep in my heart.." song again. I guess that song was really popular back then and till now. Back to the point, because of that song, i was gripping my enemies hand and singing and swaying together. This enemy of my is one racist Chinese girl from my school and my friends and I didn't expect to bum into the girl and her friends. It was funny that we were holding hands, singing and laughing together. It shows no matter what hatred, racism or whatsoever that we have with other people, somehow i think National Day just erase it away from my heart. Because all of us Singaporeans and that all of us are proud of it. That similar feeling in our heart brought all of us together as one.

But as a kiasu Singaporean, I'm always interested in the NDP funpack. Why? Because they always have exciting stuff inside and second, it's free. I'm a Singaporean, what do you expect. Kiasu as always. Haha. My father is a primary school teacher, so i'm always the first to search through the funpack he brought bag and try to find anything interesting and the food inside. The only time i ever brought back my own funpack would be when i was in Primary 5. But everytime before National Day is coming up, my family and friends will always try to guess what's the next design for the NDP bag. It's always changing and get's nicer just as how Singapore is; changing & improving. A great mirror image.

Well, I guess that's my experience. I guess i'll be celebrating NDP like i always did these few years. Going to esplanade or any part of town to see the fireworks with my friends. Then watch the second telecast of NDP the next day. Well, although i'm not that active anymore in this NDP stuff, i'm still proud of Singapore and i love my country!
